Revive: To Restore From a Depressed, Inactive, or Unused State

Hello! Laura here. It’s so nice to meet you.

Like many of you, I used to think of shopping as a hobby. I’d buy something new to celebrate an accomplishment or to cheer me up when I felt sad. Up until a few years ago, I hardly ever shopped for things secondhand. Fast fashion was fun and cheap and available everywhere. So I bought without giving a single thought to the real cost of an item.

Then I read something that completely changed my mind. In January 2020, I stumbled upon a book review for Fashionopolis and fell down the rabbit hole educating myself on the negative consequences of the fast fashion industry.

Did you know the volume of clothing Americans throw away each year has doubled from 7 million to 14 million tons in the last 20 years? And that it takes up to 700 gallons of water to make one new t-shirt? If everyone bought just one used item instead of new each year, we would save 25 BILLION gallons of water. That's the equivalent of 1.25 billion showers.

Whoa. Is your mind as blown as mine was? I used to buy a lot of athletic wear when I was teaching spin classes because I thought it was important to look and feel good for my students. Not once did I stop to consider the negative consequences beyond my bank account.

I didn’t know these things before, but now I knew too much. So, I started Revive Athletics with the vision of selling premium athletic wear in an eco-friendly manner. I also wanted to create a community of like-minded change makers - one that educates and empowers us to prioritize not only looking good, but contributing toward the greater good.

Shopping secondhand is a small change everyone can make that has a big impact on the environment, the well-being of others, and your budget. Thank you for joining me and the other Revivalists in this effort.

Never underestimate the power of positive movement.
